IMAGINING A NEW ERA IN SKIN CARE:
BEYOND LASERS TO LED LIGHT THERAPY

Two New Light Therapy Options to address skin challenges from PhotoTherapeutics Inc.

Imagine the Skin Care of the Future, the magical skin machines of your dreams. You visit your Dermatologist or Spa where a small device scans you and measures sun damage and other signs of skin aging. It locates any suspicious spots imprinted by years of sunbathing, and when it finds them, your face, arm, hands, or back are placed beneath a healing light.  This magical Light Device then seeks out and repairs the ravages of sun and time with a cool, relaxing 20-minute treatment. Is this just a dream of the future?  Not really, since today there are now ways of not only assessing signs of environmental aggressors, but of treating them painlessly, easily, and with little or no down-time. And, unlike lasers or other aggressive forms of treatment, light therapy is both non-invasive and non-damaging to the skin.

Photo Therapeutics, Inc., a U.K.-based company, with its U.S. office in Lake Forest, California, offers two new photodynamic therapy devices:  Omnilux™, the healing of light, for use by physicians, and Lumière Light Thèrapie™, the luxury of light, for salons and spas. These light modalities are revolutionizing the category of ‘Light Therapy’ for treating not only sun-damaged skin, but a variety of other skin disorders.  The first, Omnilux Light Therapy, is designed for medical use. It features a triple-head, LED (light emitting diode) device with interchangeable ‘blue’, ‘red’, and ‘near infrared’ light spectra to treat acne, rosacea, psoriasis, seborrhea, and other age-related skin disorders, such as wrinkles, as well as non-melanoma skin cancers. This FDA-approved medical device uses highly focused, narrow band light waves that, unlike lasers and IPL’s, do not break or burn the skin.  Light Therapy is now the latest trend in skin rejuvenation for treatment of sun discolorations, age spots, sagging skin, as well as fine lines and wrinkles. It also reduces redness, pain and swelling after chemical peels, dermabrasion, IPL and laser surgery, while reducing healing time after procedures such as blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and mammoplasty (breast surgery).  Omnilux treatments are completely pain-free and require a series of 6 to 8 treatments over 4 to 8 weeks, and are compatible with other invasive procedures such as Botox™, dermal fillers and thread lifts.

The new, younger sister to Omnilux is Lumière Light Thèrapie*, a single-head, space-age LED light therapy device, which was adapted for use by non-medical skin care professionals in spas and salons mainly for age-related skin disorders, and cleared by the FDA. Headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Lumière combines specially formulated, light-activated topical products in four different treatment regimes to repair, vitalize, firm and clear the skin during their 20-minute revitalizing phototherapy sessions.  Lumière Light Thèrapie is available through spas, salons, estheticians and cosmeticians. These two technologies fulfill the promise of a new era of aging skin and acne care without scalpels, lasers, harsh drugs, or discomfort. Photo Therapeutics, the category leader in light therapy, protects these proven technologies with more than 35 worldwide patent applications, of which 21 have been granted to date.

What is Light Therapy and How Does it Work?

Only a few selective, low level light wavelengths have been clinically proven in multiple trials to produce optimal photo-biomodulation of the targeted cells being treated, in order to engender these enduring, revitalizing skin changes.  Photo Therapeutics equipment offers only those proven wavelengths in both their Omnilux and Lumière Light Thèrapie treatments. These intense, spectrally pure, cool light waves do not burn or break the skin, so there is no damage to either epidermal or dermal tissue, and both devices are FDA-approved*.  Photo Therapeutics’ rich scientific heritage spans nearly 20 years and is supported by more than forty-five independent clinical and peer review studies.

As we age, cellular metabolism slows down and the mitochondria in the cells produce less energy to fuel cellular functions. Also, the DNA can become damaged by UV rays of the sun and other aggressors, so it doesn’t reproduce itself properly as it does in young skin cells. LED red light therapy (used both by Omnilux Revive™ and Lumière) works by providing light energy to stimulate fibroblasts in skin cells to produce more collagen and elastin to “re-model” the skin, giving firmness, improved texture, and an accelerating healing time. When skin is exposed to uniform light waves at precisely 633 nanometers (the red light), at the correct intensity, for the correct period of time, the cells absorb the light, become energized and begin to produce more collagen and elastin, thus restoring a more youthful skin tone and texture.  Other light spectra are used to treat skin disorders such as acne, excess oil production, inflammation and wound healing.

Skin Treatment at the Speed of Light

Light therapy treatments consist of thoroughly cleansing the skin, then placing the patient under the appropriate light treatment head, at the right distance, for about 20 minutes. The Omnilux Light Therapy device can be adjusted to treat all areas of the body, including hands, arms or torso, with Lumière Light Thèrapie designed to focus mainly on the face, neck and décolleté.

Omnilux utilizes two additional light spectra, Omnilux Blue™ and Omnilux Plus™ (near infrared), which address a wide variety of skin problems both large and small, from non-melanoma skin cancers, sun damage, rosacea, acne vulgaris, psoriasis, and vitiligo; and is especially in demand for non-invasive wrinkle reduction, and for shortening post-surgical recovery time. Numerous clinical studies over the past two decades by some of the world’s leading skin specialists attest to Omnilux’ efficacy in treating a broad range of skin disorders with their three different light options: For example, Omnilux Blue and Omnilux Revive (when used in alternating treatments) demonstrated an average 81% reduction in mild to severe inflammatory acne lesions in a series of eight treatments over four weeks. Omnilux Revive and Omnilux Plus are used alternately in a specific time regime to treat fine lines and wrinkles without causing skin injury and with results showing improved skin softness and smoothness and reduction of the depth of wrinkles.

Omnilux and Lumiere Light Therapy treatments are administered in a series and range in price. A series of 6 to 12 treatments in Spas or Salons with Lumiere run between $500 to $1,000 dollars. Physician and Medical Spa treatments for acne, psoriasis, rosacea, skin rejuvenation and non-melanoma skin cancer with Omnilux vary in price depending on the individual diagnosis and treatment protocol.
