LOBBYING 'A BEAUTIFUL THING’ TO LEGISLATORS
AT APRIL 28 'WELCOME TO OUR WORLD’ IN SACRAMENTO:
'BRUSHED OUT'/'BRUSHED UP' ON STATE’S $6 BILLION BEAUTY INDUSTRY!

Sacramento, CA – Lobbying never looked so 'good' than on Monday, April 28 just across from the State Capitol Building, where over 70 Assembly members, Senators and legislative staffers lined up to get 'beautified’ by the pros while brushing up on California's $6 billion dollar beauty industry! It was all part of the 2nd annual California 'Welcome To Our World' lobbying event hosted by the PBFC (Professional Beauty Federation of California) to heighten awareness and strengthen support of beauty industry professionals by the politicians who influence their future.

California’s 'Welcome To Our World' was dubbed 'the number one lobbying event of the year' by one California Assemblymember last year and this year, despite heavy schedules wrangling over California’s budget woes, in came the legislators and staffers for their complimentary consultations, cuts, styling, facials, make-up 'mini make-overs', manicures, and a massage to 'decompress that 'capitol' stress'. Salon and spa pros flew in from around the State to do the day-into-evening political honors at Vallejos Restaurant (the 'IN’ capitol after-work spot) from 3 -7 pm.

What better time for the pros to lobby on the beautiful issues than during 'California Professional Beauty & Barbering Week" created by the PBFC inspired Resolution ACR 52. What better way to lobby than setting up your own 'direct connect' with the state's political movers and shakers. Let's face it – lobbying can be a beautiful thing, and the PBFC has just brought this 'art form' to a whole new artistic level with California's legislators ....perhaps a little less arm twisting and lip service and a LOT more teasing, tweezing, and nailing down the issues at hand!

The event attracted top local and national media coverage being picked up by the Sacramento CBS Network news affiliate (KOVR-TV) and garnering a front page, 3-photo story in the Sacramento Bee’s "Capitol and California" section. PBFC board member and public relations executive Sharon Esche says, "The Sacramento Bee is highly respected and well read by legislators and staffers as well as the general public. We simply couldn’t have asked for a better newspaper story. . . and this prime-time tv news segment created even more positive PR for the professional side of the beauty industry!"

Orchestrating this year’s event were Sacramento school owner Gary Federico (Federico College of Hairstyling), Professional Beauty Federation of California Board Member, and Fred Jones, PBFC legislative and legal counsel. Salons and their professionals who volunteered their services for the event included Collections Salons & Day Spas, Ulta Salons, Rialto, Screams Of Passion Salon/Spa, Fantastic Sams, American Hair Force and Great Clips.

Sacramento Bee 'Scene' Reporter Allison apRoberts interviews PBFC Board Chairman Ted D. Nelson A constant stream of legislators and staffers filled Valejo's starting around 4pm and not finishing until 7pm
According to the Sacramento Bee, "Assemblyman John Longville (Democrat - Rialto) walked in looking like a shaggy captain Kangaroo and walked out looking like a tailored businessman". His great quote was, "Looks like I'll be reading those bills a bit more carefully". Senator Wm. J. "Pete" Knight (Republican - District 17) with PBFC's advocate and legal counsel Fred Jones. Sen. Knight was the quote of the day when he said with a smile, "They not only got my ear . . . they got my hair".

CBS affiliate KVOR weekend news anchor Dennis Shannahan was 'clearly relaxed' and the event received an excellent segment on the evening news. As he was getting his head and neck massage he said, "Well, this is a lot more pleasant than some of the other legislative events, you know."
